Ariana Grande’s manager Scooter Braun is speaking out about their complicated work relationship and how Ari ‘saw the light’ after ‘Sh*tty’ boyfriend left.
That’s right, y’all! It’s safe to say that Ariana Grand and Scooter Braun went through a bit of a rough patch.
For those who need a refresher, Ariana Grande and her manager Scooter Braun went their separate ways back in February 2016 before reuniting the following September. Considering Scooter manages some of the biggest acts in the biz, like Justin Bieber, for example, we couldn’t help but wonder what exactly went down between these two that led to them no longer working together.
If you caught Scooter’s recent interview with Variety, you finally got some answers! In the interview, Scooter spoke candidly about being fired by the singer and how they made amends after she broke up with a, QUOTE, “shitty boyfriend.” Well, you live and you learn, right?
At the moment, it’s still unclear exactly which of Ari’s ex-boyfriends Scooter was referring to. She and Big Sean broke up in April 2015, and she didn’t start dating Mac Miller until August 2016. In between those two high profile relationships, though, Ari dated her backup dancer Ricky Alvarez, so some fans are convinced that it’s him. Regardless, whichever ex-boyfriend it was clearly had an impact on her professional relationship with Scooter, and to say it angered her entire management team would be a HUGE understatement.
Despite his team advising him to go public about what happened between him and Ariana, Scooter told Variety that, when he saw another manager speak their truth, the artist hated them forever, and he didn’t want that to happen with him and Ari. He told Variety, QUOTE, “With Ariana, I could have said a lot of stuff, and in fact my team wanted me to, because they were pissed. But I said, ‘We’re not gonna say a word and this is gonna come back around.’”
As it turns out, Scooter was right. After several months had passed, Ariana reached out to him again and the two met up to have what Scooter called a, QUOTE, “very honest conversation.” Despite his team advising him not to take Ariana back, the two were able to resolve their issues and work together once again. Still, though, their working relationship is far from perfect.
Scooter said, QUOTE, “It made me and her really tight, because now when we get into those fights and she’s coming at me, I jut go, ‘Woah, do you want to go back to where we were?’ and then it kinda calms down.”
Also, Scooter told the mag that what they went through actually helped them get through the tragic terrorist attack that happened at Ariana’s concert in Manchester in May of 2017, which killed 23 concertgoers and injured hundreds more.
He said, QUOTE, “That relationship we had, from being fired to getting back together, really gave us the strength for what he never imagined would come that following year.”
Even after all that they’ve been through together, though, Scooter still does get frustrated with Ari at times. Like, for example, earlier this month when she dropped out of a scheduled performance at the F*ck Cancer Gala after the death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller and one day before her split from Pete Davidson.
At the event, Scooter addressed the crowd saying, QUOTE, “Someone I’m very close to was supposed to come and sing for you today, and because of things that she’s going through, she couldn’t be here today. And while I was frustrated, being the manager, my wife, being who she always is, just looked at me and she goes, ‘She needs this time.’ Honestly, we couldn’t agree more.
