My dream casting might actually be a reality. Ready for this… Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Dove Cameron as Glinda in the Wicked Movie. Please let this be true!
What’s up? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and Wicked fans gather round, I have some news for you.
If you’re a true Broadway stan, you know that earlier this year, Universal and Comcast announced that the Wicked movie will be released December 22, 2021.
It was originally actually supposed to come out this year, but CATS took that slot.
Y’all already know how the internet felt about that CATS trailer …
Anyway, now that the date of Wicked’s release is very slowly but surely getting closer, casting is on the top of all of our minds.
And the one question that we’ve all been asking is — will Ariana Grande be in the Wicked movie?
And before you come at me, nothing is for sure yet, but I have to say… It looks pretty promising that Ariana could be cast as Elphaba.
And the casting possibility news comes straight from Wicked’s composer Stephen Schwartz, who talked about Ariana in a recent interview with Gay Times.
And though Stephen said that it is still a little bit early to nail down casting, he heavily implied that Ariana is being “seriously considered” for a part.
He said quote, “The Wicked movie is not quite far enough along yet for us to really be talking about specific casting, but obviously everyone is very aware of the presence in the world of Ariana Grande and her extraordinary talent. We’d be fools for her not to be being seriously considered.”
But ultimately it isn’t Stephen’s decision.
He said quote, “Stephen Daldry is our director and he will have a lot to say about the casting, as will Universal and the studio. But, as I say, let’s just say that all of us are very aware of Ariana Grande.”
Got it, definitely understood.
The timing also might work out perfectly because Ariana will be wrapping her up her Sweetener tour soon, so she might have all of 2020 to commit to the Wicked movie if she is cast.
And if you’re a true Ari fan, you know that before becoming the biggest pop star in the world, Ari started her career off being in musicals.
We all remember those adorable curly haired pics of her from Thirteen on Broadway.
But more recently, Ari performed “The Wizard and I” on NBC’s live concert event celebrating Wicked’s 15th anniversary.
And if that wasn’t the best audition of all time, I don’t know what is.
Back then fans were begging for more of Ari and Wicked together.
One person tweeted quote, “Give us more of this @ArianaGrande and #Wicked This was spectacular in every sense of the word.”
And another said quote, “Ariana showed her range. She KILLED it. Not a very easy song to sing. My admiration of her went up exponentially, once I heard of her love for @WICKED_Musical”
Oh yea, did I forget to mention that Ariana is a HUGE fan of Wicked? She has mentioned many times that she would be honored to play any role in the movie adaptation.

And here’s a baby Ari already ready to slay the role of Elphie.
And lest we not forget, that last year wasn’t even her first time performing The Wizard and I.
Here she is singing it back in the day, and she even KILLED it back then.
So, while it definitely sounds like Ariana would be a great fit for Elphaba and is being seriously considered for the role, we still have more questions.
If Ari is gonna play Elphie who is going to play Glinda?
Funny enough back in the day, Ariana actually wanted to play Glinda, but it seems like her voice now is too perfect for Elphaba to pass by.
Back in 2011 Ariana tweeted quote, “Team Glinda (though I sometimes root for Elphie) xx . RT @ClubAriana @ArianaGrande are you Team Elphaba or Team Glinda:)? I’m team Glenda”
But if the current casting for Glinda was up to me and Kristin Chenoweth, Dove Cameron would get the role.
YAS Kristin, we couldn’t agree more.
But I want to know what you guys think. Are you dying to see Ariana and Dove in Wicked? And are you going to be able to wait til 2021 or are we going to have to demand this come out sooner? Cuz I am not sure if I can wait y’all!
